More on Water Changes

Why reinvent the wheel:

Water Changes by False Creek Racing Canoe Club

Dave Randall on water changes:

WATER CHANGES • getting in

 be in order as soon as you hit the water (reverse order)

 attack canoe—swim at the canoe as it is passing

 grab gunnel with your feet horizontal on the surface pointing towards the nose of the canoe (this way the canoe’s momentum will lift you out of the water rather than dragging you)

 pull up and swing ass into seat

 paddle like hell (get the canoe going first)

 steersman will tell you when to zip-up (if it is rough zip first)

WATER CHANGES (continued) • getting out

 steersman will tell you when to unzip

 paddle until replacement is two seats away

 put paddle in holder (make sure, its hard to get in and paddle when the paddle is on the seat/floor)

 roll out—do not jump to the right this causes the canoe to go to the left making it hard for the replacements to get in (go straight up if you must jump)

 wait for escort boat—stay together
